Safer gambling

The support tools available in Britain each apply at a different moment: GAMSTOP excludes a reader from every online operator licensed by the Gambling Commission, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 gives free, confidential support at any hour, and BeGambleAware publishes self-assessment and self-help material. The sections below set out which route does what, and where each one stops.

Self-exclusion through GAMSTOP: one registration, a fixed term

GAMSTOP is the free online self-exclusion scheme for Great Britain. One registration covers every online gambling operator holding a Gambling Commission licence, so a barrier raised once sits across the whole licensed online market. The term runs for at least six months, with one-year and five-year options for a reader who wants a longer break. An exclusion that is live cannot be cancelled early: the length chosen is the length served. A barrier that lifts whenever it is requested offers little protection on the evening it is most needed.

The scheme reaches licensed operators only. It binds sites that hold a Gambling Commission licence and has no force against anything that does not, a boundary that matters when the wider market is in play.

The National Gambling Helpline, free around the clock

The National Gambling Helpline answers on 0808 8020 133. Calling costs nothing, the line is open around the clock, and the support given is confidential. GamCare runs the service, and it exists for anyone in Britain affected by gambling harms: the person whose play has outgrown its budget, and anyone close to that person. No proof is needed before a call is worth making, and a conversation can end whenever the caller chooses.

BeGambleAware tools and self-assessment

BeGambleAware funds the National Gambling Treatment Service and publishes material a reader can use without a call: a structured self-assessment, and self-help tools to sit beside it. The self-assessment converts a vague sense that something has slipped into a set of answers, often the first honest look a reader takes at their own play. GamCare, the charity behind the helpline described above, also publishes forums and treatment routes, so written support and peer conversation are available to a reader who would rather not pick up the phone.

Using the routes together

The three routes do different jobs, and they work alongside each other. A self-assessment gives a reader information. The helpline turns that information into a conversation with a person. GAMSTOP fixes a decision in place as a structural barrier that stays up for the whole term chosen. None of the steps depends on another: a reader can start with the self-assessment, call the line first or go straight to the scheme. The helpline and the registration are both free, and the helpline keeps what is said confidential.

What the offshore segment does not carry

The offshore segment, which several guides on this site cover, sits outside all of the above. Sites in that part of the market, as a class, do not take part in GAMSTOP, appear on no British register, provide no route to approved alternative dispute resolution, and fall outside both the British credit card ban and British game-testing requirements. A GAMSTOP exclusion does not follow a reader there. Everything above is tied to a Gambling Commission licence, and a site without one carries none of it however its terms read.

The law draws its own line. Under the Gambling Act 2005, the offence provisions sit with operators and advertisers, with those who provide or advertise gambling facilities while unlicensed. Playing on an unlicensed overseas site is not itself an offence for the individual. What disappears is protection rather than legality.

Nothing on this site works around a protection. No guide on Daily Prize Games offers a way past a self-exclusion, a payment block or an ISP block, and none ever will. A reader who has excluded themselves and then meets an offshore site through one of these pages has met a gap in their own protection, not a way round it, and the routes described above are the right next step.

Where the fixed care block appears

Every guide page on Daily Prize Games carries a fixed block of care wording, placed after the main content and kept identical from page to page. It repeats the signposts this page sets out in full: the helpline, the self-exclusion scheme and the organisations behind them. That sameness is deliberate. A signpost that never drifts is one a reader can rely on finding, however they arrive at a page and however far down it they read. This site page exists because the block is short; the detail behind each signpost lives here.
